Alex Burroughs - Wholesale Account Manager
How long have you worked at Global Brands?
Almost 1 year
What is your role at Global Brands and what does it entail?
Wholesale Account Manager for Foodservice. My role is Hybrid, so it will entail managing regional wholesalers across the country but also identifying and converting key retail accounts within foodservice to drive volume & new listings. I also look after Foodbuy, who are the largest procurement group within the UK.
How did you get into it?
I’ve worked in foodservice for the last seven years, and I’ve always loved the drinks side of the industry and the buzz of winning new business, so this role felt like a perfect fit. Before joining Global Brands, I spent four years at Brakes and two years at Britvic Carlsberg, which gave me a solid foundation and loads of great experience.
What’s the best project you’ve worked on and why?
So far it would have to be getting Re’al listed with The Coffee House, which is the fastest growing regional independent coffee chain in the UK. We went head-to-head with some huge syrup brands, and after a pretty tough testing process, they told us Re’al was “hands down” the superior product. We always knew that the product was great, but hearing this feedback from an extremely successful operator was very satisfying. That launch has also opened up some great conversations with other well-known coffee chains, so it’s been really exciting to see the momentum build.
What do you like the most about working at Global Brands?
There are lots of things I enjoy, but one of the biggest is having the autonomy to shape the role and being trusted to do what I think will deliver the best results. Working for an independent business has been a real breath of fresh air too, there’s far less red tape, and your wins genuinely make an impact which is really motivating. And as a big food lover, Il be honest…. the free hot lunches at Casa Hotel are definitely a favourite!
What’s your favourite GB product and why?
There are so many, but I would have to say Franklin & Sons, in particular the Raspberry lemonade flavour as it tastes amazing! Shanky’s Whip is also right up there!
And just to be nosy, what’s your favourite packet of crisps?
Walkers Sensations Lime and Coriander Chutney Snacks all day!
What one piece of advice would you give to someone thinking about a career in the drinks industry?
Go for it! It’s definitely a challenging sector, so you must be ready to roll your sleeves up, but it’s honestly so rewarding. You meet loads of brilliant people, you learn a lot, and you’ll have plenty of fun along the way.
